The Most reputed tech brand Apple has launched its 5th version of its smartwatch ”Apple watch series 5”. At a glance, it is easily understandable that it is the most practical smartwatch from Apple. Although most of the features are derived from its predecessor. The only major difference from the old version is the always-on display (AOD) and some minor improvements mainly regarding software and sensors.

As always the display is available with 40 mm and 44 mm screen sizes, the larger one having a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels at 326 PPI and a screen to body ratio of 60%. It weighs about 47.8 g. It has an internal storage of 32 GB. Series 5 powered by apple’s S5 chip-set, whose processing speed is decent enough.

Also, a decent enough battery of about 296 mah (LI-ION) battery. However, because of the always-on display, although battery size has been increased there won’t any difference in battery life. Similar to the previous generation it supports Wi-Fi 6.0 ( 802.11 AC), Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC ( Apple pay) and e-sim support for the cellular version. It also has ECG support ( Electro Cardio Graph ).

It includes all the sensors required for sports usage namely accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer (measures atm pressure), heart rate (second generation) and a compass which was included this year. Like its predecessor, it comes with a loudspeaker and decent microphone. Apple claim, for mixed usage, the battery supports up to 18 hours.

Lastly a 5 W brick with wireless charging dock is included which charges the watch in just about 1 hr. Additionally, 19$ (1699 INR) priced 12 W brick takes just half an hour to charge the device. Although it runs of watchOS 6.0 out of the box, it is upgradable to watchOS 6.1. Finally, the LTPO-OLED screen also supports 3D touch which is protected by sapphire crystal glass according to Apple. It is currently available with 3 color variants ( space-black, silver, gold ), a bunch of cases and lots of strap options to choose with.

Coming to water resistance, not only being waterproof with swim and sweat proof and has up to 50 m of water resistance under 5 atm pressure.

Practicality:

The AOD ( Always On Display) is one of the biggest practically usable features this year. The different algorithm developed by apple uses the information from various sensors which detect even minor changes in the body and warn the user if there is a health issue. This is evident with many Apple users in the past saved many people's lives. It is the most accurate personal fitness and health tracker ( including breathing tracker). Sadly it doesn't support sleep tracker.

Extra Bites:

Although, the display on the watch has a refresh rate of 60 Hz while normal usage, the refresh rate falls down to 1 Hz (1 per second) to make battery savings.

Coming to Apple watches, obviously, durability is a bit of downside, though the newer iPhones are better. Although Apple claims it comes with sapphire crystalline glass protection since it's not pure sapphire. There is almost no difference.

Repairability:

Apple watches have the reputation of least repairable products and this watch is no different. Apple charges enough money just to replace the broken glass to make us feel it is better to buy a new one.

Cost Review:

Although it is priced at  $799 (40900 INR ), the top-end watch with a stainless steel band and the case for cellular model costs whopping $1799. The silly thing is that the Watch (GPS version) only cost $799, the costliest band and case costs  $1000
